Problem

Many college students and young professionals struggle to stay consistent with fitness routines due to lack of time, motivation, and engaging tools. Existing fitness apps often overwhelm users with data, require paid subscriptions for basic features, or lack personalization which leads to low retention.

How might we make fitness tracking feel simple, motivating, and approachable so users can build consistent workout habits?

Solution

Create a fitness app designed to make staying active simple and motivating. The app combines personalized workout recommendations, progress tracking, and engaging features to create a friendly experience that encourages consistency.

User Research

Survey

To better understand the fitness habits of potential users, I conducted research through and a survey of 23 participants ages 19 - 32.

What I asked: "What are the biggest challenges you face that keeps you from working out consistently or at all?"

Key Findings:

- 61% struggled with maintaining motivation to work out regularly.
- 52% preferred short, flexible workouts, they could fit into their day.
- 30% reported feeling intimidated by complex and cluttery fitness apps.

Users wanted apps that felt personal, encouraging, and easy to use, but most importantly, something they could come back to regularly.

Research Takeaways

Simplicity drives engagement - Aim to create simple and telling visuals for users to absorb information and features for this app.

Introduce features to keep users engaged - Implementing an A.I bot to aid in advice or exercises can keep people information hungry and motivated as well as options to start new challenges.

Accessibility - Allow users to see progress, choose activities, and view their stats with a simple layout and navigation, trying to keep it readable and not overwhelming.

Design Solutions

  • Create an Interface that allows users to see progress immediately and easily.

  • Introduce features that would allow users to interact and engage with every time they use the app.

  • Add motivating messages and progressing visuals to encourage users to continue activity and progress.

  • Include option to monitor health and options for information for health and exercises.

User Flow

Design Process

When it comes to defining the first main screen the user lands on, I wanted it showcase the main summary of the user's workout details for the week visually. I didn't want to overwhelm the user with numbers and data and only showcase the important takeaways details as well as features for the user to immediately access upon arrival.

If the users want to view more in depth stats and activity details, they can navigate accordingly using the navbar dedicated to each section. The activity section contains details for the week while also letting users create a new workout.
The overview section allows user to view stats from the past days, weeks, months, to even years as well as their progress.

I wanted to include a section dedicated to Health which allows users to track their sleep and heart stats which is meant to allow users to personally monitor themselves and go for an empathetic direction which doesn't ignore the user and their personal bodies and needs.

The profile section includes their personal information section as well as a progress reminder to encourage them to continue their journey. My goal is to let users have access to features and visuals that would ultimately encourage users to continue their progress and keep on making new workouts and goals.

Color

For Move+, I chose a green gradient with soft fades as the primary color to create a calming and soothing experience. Green is often associated with growth, balance, and health which are values that align directly with fitness and wellbeing. To complement this, I also introduced a vibrant yellow accent, which adds energy and positivity while balancing the calming green. Together, these colors create a visual identity that feels inviting, motivating, and approachable without overwhelming the user.

Final Designs

Main Screens

Quick Start Workouts

  • Placed front and center on the home screen, allowing users to begin a workout in just one tap. This reduces friction and supports users who need efficiency.

AI Trainer+ Bot

  • A conversational assistant that guides users through workout recommendations, answers fitness questions, and encourages progress. This adds a sense of support and personalization without overwhelming the user.

Activity Dashboard

  • A simplified overview of steps, distance, and calories burned with clear visualizations. This helps users quickly see their achievements without digging through complex menus.

Profile & Goal Tracking

  • Users can set fitness goals and track long-term progress. The design emphasizes clarity and motivation, encouraging users to return and stay consistent.

Challenge Section

  • Adds gamification by allowing users to take on weekly or monthly challenges. This feature fosters motivation, turning workouts into milestones rather than obligations.

Health Integration

  • Sections for heart rate, sleep, and meals create a holistic view of wellness, but remain streamlined so users aren’t overwhelmed by excessive data.

Conclusion

Outcome

Move+ taught me that simplicity and motivation go hand in hand by designing with empathy and users in mind, fitness can become less of a chore and more of a habit. Through Move+, I set out to create a fitness app that feels simple, supportive, and motivating. By focusing on engaging visuals and a clean interface, I made tracking workouts less intimidating and more approachable. Key features such as the AI Trainer+ bot and a Challenge section were designed to encourage consistency, build habits, and keep users excited about staying active. The result is an app that reduces barriers and makes fitness feel achievable for all types of users.

I learned the process of gathering research and data and incorporating it into user design and visuals. I increased my understanding of creating a flow for an app and also creating mockups and wireframes and turning them into usable prototypes. These are skills I want to improve a lot for my future projects and I apply them to the best level.

Looing Forward

While Move+ delivers a good foundation, it is by no means is a complete product and needs lots of work such as implementing a lot of the features to completion and other opportunities to take it further such expanding on the specific challenges, adding the user centered survey during the onboarding and workout creation options. With more time, I would have conducted more deeper research into fitness behaviors and workout science to make recommendations more precise. Most importantly, I would run user testing sessions with real participants to validate flows, uncover friction points, and refine features based on feedback. These next steps would help ensure that Move+ not only looks engaging but also functions as a tool that truly empowers users to stay active.
